The very concept of Ayurveda finds its roots in the texts of Charaka Samhita, a timeless work by Charaka, the legendary physician of the second century BC. The typical meaning of Ayurveda is Ayur (life) and Veda(knowledge) i.e. 'the knowledge of life'. Essentially Ayurveda is all about creating a fine balance between mind, body, and soul where wellness and beauty reflect from within. The concept of Ayurveda works on bringing synergy and equilibrium in every individual's unique self. There is a school of thought that considers Atharva Veda as the origin of Ayurveda whereas traces of diseases and medicines can be found in the rich texts of Rig Veda too.
According to Ayurvedic principles, every individual has a unique and specific constitution called Prakruti which further means a typical physical, the physiological, and mental character of an individual. Prakruti is determined by three bodily energies called Dosha namely Pitta, Vata & Kapha. Disturbance of balance in Doshas is known as Vikruti which leads to poor immune systems and becomes the root cause of all diseases. Basically, Doshas are the byproduct of 5 elements of nature namely Air, Fire, Water, Earth & Ether.
Vata is the energy made up of Air and Ether and largely responsible for a movement like breathing, blinking, muscle and tissue movement, heartbeat, and movements in the cytoplasm and cell membranes. A properly balanced Vata brings creativity and flexibility while an imbalance in Vata can lead to joint pain, dry skin, anxiety other such issues.
Pitta is made up of Fire and Water and manages digestion, absorption, assimilation, nutrition, metabolism, and body temperature. A properly balanced Pitta improves the elements of understanding and intelligence while out of balance Pitta can lead to indigestion, ulcers, anger, heartburn, skin rashes, and other such problems.
Kapha is the energy made up of Water and Earth and administers bones, muscles, and other body structure-related aspects. It regulates water in the body and is responsible for holding cells together. Lubrication of joints, skin moisturization, and immunity are core functions of Kapha.
